Rio

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 8 years

Rio – a sensitive loner seeks a quiet home with clear leadership Rio came to the animal shelter because his previous owner could no longer take care of him due to age. People he trusts meet him very openly, loyal, and attentive. However, in the stressful shelter environment, it's hard for him to show his positive sides. I am Rio – and if you ever earn my trust, I am a loyal, eager-to-learn, and very attentive companion. I have good hearing, know basic commands, am house-trained, and can also be left alone for a few hours. I don't mind driving, and I wear my muzzle reliably when outside. At home, I am a real cuddle bear and like to relax on my spot – at home, I am super uncomplicated. I strongly orient myself to my primary caregiver and am very eager to do everything right. What you need to work on with me I am very sensitive and react strongly to stress – this is shown in me quickly with diarrhea or weight loss. In the shelter, I was completely out of place and lost a lot of weight – since I am now looking for a new home, everyone hopes that I will make a stop at the shelter again. The many stimuli in the urban environment overwhelm me, and I react strongly to other dogs outside, and would also defend my master if a person came too close to us. In my previous home, I subconsciously learned to defend my people against other dogs and strangers – this must be worked on with me. I do not tolerate visitors at home – I typically defend my territory against unknown strangers. People I have met before, however, are welcome. What I am looking for I wish for a quiet home outside the city – preferably on the outskirts or in the countryside. There should be no children in the household, and no other dogs. You should have experience with dogs like me and help me regain security with clear, loving leadership so that I can shed my leash aggression. Due to my physical condition, there should be as few stairs as possible. If you are ready to take the time to get to know me, you will find a really loyal friend and a very conscientious German Shepherd in me. If you fit with me and want to give me a home, please contact my animal caretakers at the Lassie House either or through the contact form below.

About Rio

What life with Rio looks like

Rio is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Stress-sensitive with digestive issues, requires muzzle outdoors, needs behavioral training for resource guarding

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
