Roderick

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

At the animal shelter since: March 2025 Estimated age: born around July 2017 Estimated shoulder height: about 50 – 59 cm Learn more about Roderick in additional videos! Roderick - people-oriented, playful and full of trust! What Roderick had to go through in his previous life we can only imagine. When he arrived at the animal shelter, he had a noticeable scar on his neck – a sign that he had apparently been tied up or restrained with something very tight. For more information on how the dogs end up at the animal shelter and answers to general questions, you can find our animal protection FAQ. In dealing with humans, Roderick shows himself to be extremely social, clingy and playful. He actively seeks contact, asks for cuddles, likes to lie on his back, and enjoys physical contact very much. He is always cooperative: brushing him and putting on his collar are no problem. His attention clearly focuses on the person he seeks closeness, safety and mental stimulation from. In everyday life, Roderick appears lively and interested. Walks and joint activities bring him joy, and he can regulate his energy well, finding calm after a short time. On the playground, he shows only brief interest in exploration, remains responsive throughout, and usually chooses to stay close to people. In contact with fellow animals, he generally shows little interest, which is why he currently lives alone. In the past, Roderick was restrained with something very tight around his neck, leaving a scar that still presses against it. This has led to somewhat irregular breathing and frequent coughing. Therefore, he underwent surgery and is currently recovering at the animal shelter. Our adoption team knows best about his exact health condition. If you have further questions, please send us a message. A home is sought for Roderick, where his close bond with humans can take center stage. He fits well with active people who enjoy engaging with him and providing him with clear structures. A home as a single dog or with a suitable, confident only dog seems most appropriate for him at the moment. We wish to find for this fur nose people who are aware that adoption dogs come with a certain history. We can never predict how a dog will react to life in Germany at the animal shelter. That's why we are looking for people who bring patience, perseverance, and goodwill. Already smitten? Send us a self-disclosure form! Adoption If you are thinking about adopting, read through the adoption process first. All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas, and neutered before travel arrangements (with the exception of puppies under 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs over one year old are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have any further questions, feel free to send a message to our adoption team.

About Roderick

What life with Roderick looks like

Roderick is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Roderick, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Roderick?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Roderick on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Roderick if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Roderick already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Roderick isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Roderick and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
