Ronja

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

03.02.25: Our Ronja has been with us now for almost 7 years...we are always surprised how quickly time passes without ever having found a permanent home for Ronja. Ronja's circumstances at the time were more than mysterious. Alongside Ronja and her then companion Rasmus, dogs resembling old German pointer breeds were found in quick succession in the Vulkaneifel. Despite thorough investigations, no one has ever been able to trace the person who abandoned the dogs in this manner.... Ronja had barely learned anything up to that point, smelled of pigsty, and was rather neglected. Today, our bear from the animal shelter is an integral part of our lives. She is no longer the loudest, prefers to avoid trouble rather than start it, and used to be the first to raise her fist! She also becomes more calm and occasionally takes a break at our Brigitte's place. There, she leaves the shelter life behind and enjoys her time with her human friend ❤️ 20.07.2020: Our Ronja the Räubertochter loves people, but only HER people. Strangers are not welcome, as she does not want to share her favorite people. This is not an option for Ronja. Mmmpf, you must be thinking, how can such a dog ever leave the animal shelter again?! That is the million-dollar question. Here, patient people are needed. Male or female, willing to invest time in getting to know each other. And we are not talking about 2 or 3 visits, but weeks of mutual sniffing. Ronja needs time to get used to new things. In the new home, there should be only a few people who want to make her life more beautiful. Ronja is a "1 or at most 2-person dog." Yes, they exist. They are in all animal shelters. Dogs that only need ONE reliable and, above all, confident person by their side. No children, no other dogs, no cats, no small pets, fish would be okay?

Keine Kinder, keine anderen Hunde, keine Katzen, keine Kleintiere, Fische wären okay ? Ihr seht, Ronjas

About Ronja

What life with Ronja looks like

Ronja is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Mayen in Mayen.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ronja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ronja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Mayen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ronja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ronja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Mayen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ronja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ronja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Mayen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ronja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
