Rocky

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 8 years

19.07.2025: Rocky is searching for his Forever Home – with Heart, Mind, and Patience. The seven-year-old Rocky, an imposing German Shepherd-Appenzeller mix, has been waiting at this breed animal shelter since April 2024 for people who truly understand him – and not just see him, but recognize him. Rocky has had no easy life. He lived very secluded with his owner on a remote property, where he was allowed to guard. His living space consisted of an enclosed area with a doghouse – without regular interaction, without playmates, without social contacts. This isolation has left its mark. Rocky is a sensitive, insecure dog still searching for his place in the world. He needs people with dog experience, empathy, and patience – no quick expectations, no loud words, no pressure. Trust with Rocky develops slowly – but when it’s there, it’s deep. Once someone gets into his heart, they stay there. What Rocky needs: A single person or a quiet couple – no large family, no young children. Clear, loving guidance – with calmness, sovereignty, and structure. Patience and understanding – especially regarding resources (e.g., toys), with which he currently has difficulties. A fair “trade-off” is already working, but it still requires targeted work. The willingness to work together with an experienced dog trainer – especially in the area of social behavior with other dogs. Physically fit people – Rocky is strong, has a prey drive, and cannot be handled by everyone. Despite his size, strength, and insecurity, Rocky is primarily a dog with a deep need for attachment, security, and love. At the animal shelter, he is very sad – he doesn’t belong behind bars but by the side of a person who doesn’t shy away from his story but embraces it. Rocky is not a dog for everyone. But maybe you are exactly the person he desperately needs. If you feel that Rocky and you could meet on equal terms, then contact us. Rocky is waiting – not for anyone, but for his person. 30.08.2024: Rocky has been with us for quite some time now and has integrated well into the shelter routine. He is a physically strong, large dog, with a good portion of prey drive, and you need strong arms if a deer crosses the path around the animal shelter ;-). Over the past few years, Rocky likely learned little, but lived quite isolated with his owner. Many situations unsettle him, whether a door that isn’t fully open, quick movements, or falling objects. So Rocky is strong and large in stature... but inside his heart and mind, it looks very different. Despite this, he still searches for stable and dog-experienced people who can show him what the world outside has to offer. People who understand him, catch him, and lead him ♡! 12.04.24 Rocky came to us through a seizure by the veterinary office. We still don’t know much about the large male dogs and are getting to know him slowly. Currently, he is still very excited and doesn’t understand his situation at all.

About Rocky

What life with Rocky looks like

Rocky is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Mayen in Mayen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rocky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rocky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Mayen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rocky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rocky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Mayen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rocky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rocky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Mayen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rocky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
