Rosti

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

Rosti was successfully rehomed in July 2017! ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. I am male, neutered and born around 2005. I am about 60cm tall. I have been waiting for a new home since November 2016. This is what my current owners say about me: Rosti may have to go back to the animal shelter due to separation reasons and because he can no longer accompany his owner to work. We would like to avoid this and are trying to find interested people beforehand. Rosti lives as a single dog, suitable for apartment living and has always been able to go to work with his owner and works there in security. Since he cannot be left alone, this has been the ideal solution so far. Unfortunately, this is no longer desired and since the owner now lives separately, it's a real problem. According to the owner, there are no age-related problems and/or illnesses. Rosti needs clear and consistent leadership; he is not the classic retriever cuddle dog. If he gets his leadership, the cohabitation goes smoothly, if not, he takes over. Dogs that he knows in the environment are his playmates, at work he is balanced and alert. Rosti cannot be left alone; he is a good passenger and, with sufficient off-leash time, is also house-trained. Rosti was abandoned with us in 2007 and then ran away, wandered for weeks and was even scheduled for euthanasia, until he found an opportunity on a local property and we could secure him with a tranquilizer. Some men did not like Rosti and he showed this clearly. On the other hand, he was very popular here and showed that a retriever was in him. In the new home, a lot was trained, we are sorry that he now has to come back to us due to the changed living circumstances and hope for a suitable home, especially considering his age. He needs to be challenged and should also enjoy his retirement. Experience with dogs must be present, other animals should not live in the new home. A female dog we can imagine, but this must be tested in advance. We would actually like Rosti to move directly into the new home...who wants to give him the chance for a great retirement? The descriptions are impressions and recordings of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. Each animal can develop differently in a new home.

Rosti konnte im Juli 2017 erfolgreich vermittelt werden! …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

About Rosti

What life with Rosti looks like

Rosti is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rosti, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rosti?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rosti on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rosti if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rosti already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rosti isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rosti and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
