Roya

Belgian Malinois · Female · Young · 1 year

Roya came to us as a surrender dog, as she was unwanted by her previous owners. Additionally, they were unable and unwilling to fulfill the official requirements. The beginning with Roya was not easy. We can only imagine what the sensitive female dog has experienced. She is full of affection for humans, but internally she fights between the desire for closeness and the fear of being hurt. Out of this uncertainty, she sometimes tries to keep people at a distance through defensive behavior. At first, any touch, a small correction, or an unintended movement could trigger Roya to go into an attack. Unfortunately, she has likely learned that pressure begets counter-pressure. Much of her behavior results from insecurity and what she has learned in the past. This behavior cannot be changed overnight. Step by step, with much patience and empathy, we are working to show Roya that not every touch, every correction, and every human movement means something negative. She needs a calm, loving, but also consistent guidance to build trust and gain security. At just under one year old, Roya is a true rough diamond that will grow into a great companion with the right people by her side. Experienced dog owners, ideally with breed experience, are sought who are willing to continue working with her and to challenge her both physically and mentally. Children should not live in her new home. Roya, however, gets along very well with other dogs – she runs in a suitable dog group with us and, despite her youthful mischievousness, shows herself to be social and sovereign.

About Roya

What life with Roya looks like

Roya is a large young adult belgian malinois dog waiting at Tierheim Velbert in Velbert.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Roya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Roya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Velbert handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Roya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Roya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Velbert will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Roya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Roya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Velbert early rather than rehoming privately; they know Roya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
