Ruben

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Ruben is a sensitive dog who has apparently not experienced much security in his life so far. Many things still frighten him and in some situations he simply does not know how to deal with them. Therefore, Ruben needs people who give him time and patiently show him that the world does not have to be so frightening. Ruben is basically a nice guy who just needs to learn a lot and build trust. He needs people who take his fears seriously, give him security and at the same time deal with him in a confident and clear manner. Because Ruben does not need to be pitied and pampered at every little uncertainty - he needs people who calmly convey: "You are safe, I have the situation under control." Therefore, we are looking for people who already have experience with anxious or insecure dogs or are willing to deal intensively with this topic. A confident first dog, preferably a relaxed female, could help Ruben to orient himself and gain security. However, this is not a prerequisite if his future people can give him this security themselves. Since Ruben is still insecure in many situations, we do not want to place him with small children. A quiet, regulated everyday life without a lot of hustle and bustle would be ideal for him. A house with a securely fenced garden is particularly important for Ruben. Especially in the first time, he should have the opportunity to settle in at his own pace and not have to leave the house immediately for every little round. Ruben is not looking for a family that pitied him, but people who understand him. People who have patience, set boundaries and orientation and discover the world with him step by step.

DE·Show original

About Ruben

What life with Ruben looks like

Ruben is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Herne-Wanne in Herne.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ruben, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ruben?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Herne-Wanne handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ruben on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ruben if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Herne-Wanne will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ruben already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ruben isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Herne-Wanne early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ruben and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
