Rüdiger

German Shepherd · Unknown

Rüdiger, whom we affectionately call "Rüdi," arrived at our shelter as a found dog and was never reported missing. Unfortunately, this suggests that he may have been abandoned. When Rüdi first came to us, his condition was heartbreaking. He was severely underweight, barely eating, and seemed to have lost all will to live. He was withdrawn, deeply sad and lonely. It appeared as though he wasn't just looking through people but had already given up on the world around him. Communication with him was nearly impossible; his gaze spoke of disappointment, fear, and endless resignation. His training also indicates that he has likely never been properly cared for by anyone. He knows basic commands poorly, still struggles to walk on a leash, and needs much practice. Through consistent training, he is slowly making progress, but Rüdiger is still in the very early stages of his journey. Additionally, he possesses immense strength, which is why we are looking for people who can physically and mentally handle him. However, there is hope. Slowly, the thick ice around his heart is beginning to melt. Rüdi now shows moments of genuine joy when he sees his trusted humans. He cautiously seeks contact, begins to communicate, and reveals that deep down, a dog is hiding who wants to learn to trust. Every small progress is a huge success for us. With other dogs, Rüdiger gets along well overall. However, he currently tends to bark on the leash, which is why consistent and calm training is still necessary in this area. He could be well-suited for a confident female dog who can be rehomed with him. We are looking for very special people for Rüdiger: people with experience with dogs, ideally knowledgeable about shepherd dogs or similar breeds. People who have a clear plan, can provide security, and are willing to invest time, patience, consistency, and heart. He needs someone to lead him without overwhelming him and show him that life can also be beautiful. When Rüdiger is in a quiet environment, he can let go more easily, showing his affectionate side and sighing deeply. In this sigh lies his deep longing for peace and security, for a person who finally sees him and takes his life firmly into their hands. One thing is particularly important to us: Rüdiger must never lose his home again. Right now, as he begins to build trust and open up to people, another disappointment would be almost unbearable for him. Therefore, we wish for him a permanent home - a place where he can arrive and stay forever. Anyone who gives Rüdiger this chance will not get a finished dog. But with patience, understanding, and the necessary experience, you will be able to witness how a broken dog gradually becomes a wonderful companion. And this journey is worth every effort. Rüdi wishes for a quiet rural home without small children, preferably with a suitable first dog (not mandatory). If you meet Rüdier at our shelter for the first time, please understand if he behaves like an ignorant clod. He cannot show his charm and does not dare to openly approach people. You must take the first step towards Rüdi;-)

About Rüdiger

What life with Rüdiger looks like

Rüdiger is a adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Koblenz in Koblenz.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rüdiger, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rüdiger?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Koblenz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rüdiger on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rüdiger if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Koblenz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rüdiger already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rüdiger isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Koblenz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rüdiger and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
