Rufus

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Rufus was just found running on the streets near the shelter one day, all by himself. Since we know that dog’s do not fall from Mars, then Rufus indeed must be coming from somebody. He was wearing a wide Martingale collar that was too small for him, and it was not possible to pull it over his head, therefore we believe that he has been wearing this collar for more than a year, from since he was still in his growth period. He did not have a microchip, so we do not know anything about his background, and his name Rufus is a new name given to him by our volunteers. He is already starting to react to it! Roofi, Rufu, Rufus - a good dog has many names! He already became a volunteer of our adoption team members. Rufus is open and social towards new people. He enjoys attention and scratches, and also likes to be on your lap or right next to you. Rufus seems like a playful and playful dog, but when he gets too excited, he gets a bit jumpy and in his excitement, can attempt to make little puppy type of bites - nibbles. For that reason, Rufus is really looking for a human, who understands how to talk, behave and engage with a dog that is easily exitable, to allow them to be calm in your presence, and not hype them up, to speak in a lower voice, and a calm, guiding tone. When Rufus feels like the human is confident, calm and in charge, he quickly relaxes and follows your lead. He walks well on the leash, and enjoys running in the dog parks. He is (yummy) food motivated, and likes to do little (calmness-based) training exercises with you! He has a very pleasant character, just enough active, just enough spicy and sweet. When you squat down, he loves to come to you, put his head in your hands, and enjoy closeness. Now Rufus is looking for an understanding and kind human, who likes to be active, go for walks in the nature. His home would ideally be in a quiet residential area without too many hectic stimuli, as at the moment Rufus is still a bit of a nervous boy, we do not know what he has been through, and he is still getting used to his new reality, so he is still anxious in the shelter environment of course. At the moment, he reacts very strongly to dogs, but he is already able to start focusing on the human during the walk instead. We see it often in the shelter environment, that a dog arrives to the shelter reactive towards other dogs, due to lack of socialisation, negative experiences with other dogs, or simply dislike of other dogs, but this is something that we can start working on in the shelter, and his future human would continue the work. For this reason, we are looking for a quiet living environment for him, where he can practice passing other dogs in peace and space. At the moment he is looking for a home as an only dog, in an adult home. His shoulder height is 50cm. For adoption in Spain, a PPP registration would be needed, the shelter can help with that. Rufus is also available for international adoptions. Rufus has tested positive for the Mediterrenean parasite Leishmaniosis, so he is currently on treatment for Leishmania, and his treatment plan and follow-up will be taken care of by the shelter veterinary team.

About Rufus

What life with Rufus looks like

Rufus is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Triple A Marbella in Marbella.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rufus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rufus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Triple A Marbella handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rufus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rufus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Triple A Marbella will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rufus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rufus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Triple A Marbella early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rufus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
