Saima

Mixed Breed · Female

A bit shy, Saima is looking for a calm and cat-experienced home. In recent months, Saima has become much bolder and more active. Perhaps the departure of the kittens brought out Saima’s own playful side—previously, Saima always put the kittens first, both in play and when it came to food. Today, Saima is lively and energetic. She makes contact with people by meowing when she wants to play. Often, Saima runs eagerly toward her usual play spot—the corner of the sofa—as soon as someone moves even slightly. Saima also winks her eyes, meaning she’s smiling at you. Her favorite toy has now become a feather teaser. Besides playing with her foster family’s human, Saima has also played with the caregiver, whom she’s only known for a few weekends. Saima might still dart under the sofa to hide if the doorbell rings. But once a visitor quietly enters, either alongside the foster family’s human or using their own key, like the caregiver does, Saima no longer feels the need to hide. As for physical touch, Saima is still cautious. Occasionally, the foster family’s human has been allowed to scratch Saima’s neck—often after a play session when Saima is tired and the touching is initiated with a touch stick. Saima loves having her head scratched with a soft touch stick, and it doesn’t bother her even if a human hand is nearby holding the touch stick. Although Saima may never become a lap cat, she’s clearly enjoying life as a companion to humans now. With the arrival of warmer weather, Saima has also enjoyed sitting in the netted balcony’s climbing tree and watching the outside world. Saima is a young mother cat who was found outdoors with her kittens and arrived at Rekku Rescue’s care in August 2025. Saima’s four kittens have already found their own homes, but Saima herself is still staying in foster care, getting used to human company. Saima is still a bit shy, but since arriving here, she’s become much braver. At first, Saima would hiss whenever a human approached. Now, Saima lets the foster family’s human come fairly close, though she shouldn’t be touched. Still, Saima dares to sniff the caregiver’s finger from just a few centimeters away. When strangers are around, Saima hides under the sofa for safety, but after a while, she might crawl out to take a peek at the visitors. With her foster family’s human, Saima feels comfortable being visible all the time and even lounges casually on her back. By nature, Saima is quite calm and quiet; she plays by herself relatively little. It would be important for her new home to focus on keeping her active. In foster care, Saima’s favorite toys have included a felted “roll.” Since Saima is still a bit shy, her future home should ideally have some experience with cats—and preferably experience with shy cats specifically. Especially Saima’s litter box training has been challenging. It’s therefore crucial that in the new home, they continue practicing gentle handling in preparation for future grooming procedures. Saima gets startled by sudden noises, so she’s looking for a calm home and wouldn’t be suitable for a family with small children. Saima would probably adapt best to a home where the human—or humans—have plenty of time to spend at home. Saima could also have a calm female cat as a companion, though there’s no information yet about how she’d get along with other cats besides her own kittens. Saima is slightly overweight, so it’ll be important going forward to monitor her food portions carefully. On the other hand, Saima is picky about her food: so far in foster care, she’s only liked kibble and raw food; wet food hasn’t really appealed to her. As raw food, Saima has eaten frozen turkey, chicken, and pork hearts. Saima is a healthy, well-conditioned young cat. Due to her selective diet, however, Saima can sometimes suffer from constipation—which has been fairly easily managed with appropriate supplements. During her health check-up, Saima was also found to have a slight buildup of tartar, which was recommended to be removed within about a year.

Saima uskaltaa kuitenkin jo nuuhkaista hoitajan sormea muutaman sentin päästä. Sijaiskodissa Saiman suosikkileluihin on kuulunut huovutettu ”pötkylä”. Saimalla on hiukan ylipainoa, joten jatkossa on tärkeää huolehtia sopivista ruoka-annoksista.

About Saima

What life with Saima looks like

Saima is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at Rekku Rescue ry in Helsinki.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Saima, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Saima?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rekku Rescue ry handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Saima on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Saima if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rekku Rescue ry will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Saima already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Saima isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rekku Rescue ry early rather than rehoming privately; they know Saima and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
