Adopt Sam

Male · Young · 1 year

Age: Approximately. Breed: European Shorthair. Gender: male. Color: red-spotted. Adopted at the animal shelter since: September 2025. We are searching for very special cat people for Sam, because he comes with a backpack full of ugly experiences. After Sam arrived with us in September 2025, it quickly became clear that he is FIV-positive. Unfortunately, this led to a long and exhausting period where his health went bad repeatedly. This resulted in Sam having to undergo many treatments and also injections. In the meantime, Sam's health has stabilized, but the path has left its marks. Sam is tired of sitting in our cattery and waiting for more treatments. The numerous treatments have led to Sam losing trust in our staff, which he shows by his hissing and scratching towards them. But Sam wants to forgive and we are working together with him to rebuild that trust. And he really wants to. When Sam arrived, he was a real lap cat and still shows that he wants to be stroked and petted. We are searching for a quiet home for Sam with patient people who want to give him a safe place for suitable apartment living. Before adopting Sam, we will comprehensively clarify his medical history and also explain what FIV is and how the tomcat can still have the longest and most beautiful time possible. On the topic of FIV in cats, you can learn more in the post "FIV (Cat AIDS) - What does that mean for an adoption?". Please contact us directly if you are considering adopting Sam, but are unsure due to his illness or existing defensive aggression. Our cat experts will detail your questions in an informal conversation.

About Sam

What life with Sam looks like

Sam is a young adult cat waiting at Tierheim Jübberde in Uplengen.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sam, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sam?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Jübberde handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sam on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sam if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Jübberde will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sam already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sam isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Jübberde early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sam and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
