Adopt Sam

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

We received a request for admission regarding a 10-year-old male Pyrenean Mountain Dog whose 89-year-old owner is hospitalized and will then move to a nursing home where her dog cannot accompany her. It is the woman's son and his wife who are currently caring for Sam at their home, but they have a yard that is not completely fenced and Sam has a tendency to run away to go for walks, so they are afraid something might happen to him and are forced to keep him tied up when he is in the yard or when the weather is nice and the living room door leading to their yard is open. Moreover, Sam does not seem to like cats and since he arrived at their home, their two cats no longer dare to come back inside. Sam is 20 minutes from the house, so we agreed to take him in and I went to pick him up today to do a trial at home with the senior dogs. For now, it cannot be said that it is a great success because Sam barks a lot in front of the large senior dogs, growls and grumbles especially towards Herka, whom he seems to dislike being around. I will wait to see if the situation improves tomorrow and if not, he will return to the woman's son who will become his foster family for our association. Apart from that, Sam is a very kind dog weighing 28 kg, which is overweight (this is a large breed) and should lose at least 6 kg to be healthy. He is affectionate and has been used to living as an only child with his elderly owner. He takes one levothyrox tablet per day. Sam is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations and identified. He is currently in foster care in the Oise and available for sponsorship and adoption.

About Sam

What life with Sam looks like

Sam is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Cani-Seniors in cani seniors.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇫🇷Adopting from France

French refuges follow the SPA framework: adopters sign a cession contract that includes sterilization, vaccinations, microchip identification, and rabies passport. Fees are typically €150–€300. Many refuges work with rescue transport partners for cross-border placements.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sam, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sam?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Cani-Seniors handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sam on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sam if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Cani-Seniors will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sam already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sam isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Cani-Seniors early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sam and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
