Sammy

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Sammy, who was born around 2019, was adopted as a puppy from Romania and had to leave his home after his owner passed away, and the remaining woman was unable to cope with him. Now he is searching for people who will appreciate him for who he is but also work with him on his quirks. Sammy is not a puppy who immediately runs joyfully to greet new people. He shows little interest in new people and needs time to build trust. He carefully selects his primary caregiver – his affection must be earned. Once his heart is won, he bonds closely, loves deeply, and enjoys long cuddle sessions. His trusted person can then do pretty much anything with him. While Sammy is generally compatible with other dogs, he does not necessarily need to be. A home with a confident, self-assured first-time puppy would be ideal, but he would also be happy as a singleton prince. Walks are not his greatest passion. Outdoors, he is more content to stroll leisurely and will sometimes show a clear lack of interest, wanting to stop walking. Therefore, Sammy is looking for consistent, assertive, and dog-experienced people who will set him clear boundaries and not be swayed by his behavior. Sammy would rather spend his time snuggled up in his dog bed. If someone then wants something from him and he does not want to come out, he will make that clear with his teeth – hence, he is rehomed only into the hands of experienced, child-free homes. A private yard is a prerequisite so that he can be independent and go out on his bad days. Once Sammy has built trust, he also shows his playful side, playing with his person in the garden and enjoying shared moments very much. He is house-trained and can easily be left alone. For Sammy, we are looking for a quiet home – ideally with a single person or a couple – with dog experience, patience, and a heart for special, unique personalities. This is a young, adolescent dog.

DE·Show original

About Sammy

What life with Sammy looks like

Sammy is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sammy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sammy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sammy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sammy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sammy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sammy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sammy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
