Sanja

German Shepherd · Female · Adult · 5 years

Sanja is a 1.5-year-old German Shepherd mix (probably Malimix) who is looking for a loving and experienced home. At about 55 cm tall and 25 kg, she is a sporty, attentive and very intelligent dog. She is also vigilant and has a strong protective instinct. She is initially wary of strangers, but shows this through barking. Once she has gained trust, she is friendly to familiar people and enjoys cuddling with them. She generally gets along well with other dogs. However, there have been dominance behavior and aggression issues with our older female dog since the beginning of the year. She is not compatible with other dogs on a leash. She is more anxious off-leash. Due to her strong hunting instinct, her off-leash time should be carefully managed. Cats should not live in the new home, as Sanja is not compatible with them. Sanja has a muzzle that is custom-made for her, which she wears without problems, and she wears it permanently, except when on walks. She can stay alone for 5-6 hours without a problem. She is vaccinated, chipped, and not spayed, and has no known health issues. She has also received a lot of training: she has attended puppy classes, junior dog classes and obedience training. Our dog trainer has also made house visits. She has been attending obedience training with great enthusiasm since May. She has a basic obedience - sit, stay, down, paw, "dead" and other commands - but can still be further solidified and expanded. What we are looking for for Sanja: We are looking for a loving, active, dog-experienced and consistent home for Sanja, where she can feel safe, where she can be patient with her initial uncertainty around strangers and where she can continue to train with her. A home without cats would be ideal for Sanja. A confident, suitable second dog that can set boundaries for Sanja would be possible, but would need to be individually tested in a personal meeting. Sanja is not a dog that just wants to "run along" - she wants to be engaged, promoted and consistently led. Whoever gives her this security will get a loving, attentive and eager to learn companion who is very attached to her human. Location: 32584 Löhne Age: about 1.5 years (born 01/25) Breed: German Shepherd mix Vaccinated & chipped: Yes Health: No known health issues We do not want to simply "pass on" Sanja, but give her the home where she can be happy in the long term. Therefore, we are looking for serious inquiries with some information about the living situation and the future home. Contact:

Kontakt:

About Sanja

What life with Sanja looks like

Sanja is a medium-sized adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Melle in Melle.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sanja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sanja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Melle handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sanja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sanja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Melle will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sanja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sanja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Melle early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sanja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
