Adopt Santos

Rhodesian Ridgeback · Male · Senior · 13 years

If Santos were a person, he would be the type of older, well-groomed gentleman who served in the Bundeswehr and places a great deal of value on respect, decorum, and rules. Santos had, however, always had bad luck in life, meeting only people who wanted his beauty but never engaged with Santos's character. Santos needs and wants clear rules and a clear, tough but kind leadership. No nonsense, no unclear communication, and especially no amateurs who don't understand dogs. Santos came from the last shelter where he was allowed to do whatever he wanted, could be on the sofa, and could enforce his will everywhere. Santos would do anything for his people if he had clear rules and structures to follow. He approaches strangers very openly and friendly, but only when he builds a close relationship with his people does he insist on rules and instructions. Santos has always fit well into our shelter routine from the start and accepted the rules. He loves his walks and is a modest, quiet dog when his world is in order. Santos is very understanding, understands a lot, and wants to do everything right. However, he has the potential to become rough if things go wrong, so he really needs experienced, confident people with leadership qualities. Santos can stay alone for a few hours, enjoys car rides, and swims in the summer. With other dogs, it depends on the relationship; female dogs generally get along well with him, but with male dogs, it depends on the individual. Santos walks well on a leash but can develop enormous strength if he has a specific goal. Santos is cuddly, bonds very closely with his people, and now needs a home that understands and leads him responsibly. He is looking for a child-free, cat-free home, preferably in the countryside, with people who understand dogs and want to live a quiet, peaceful life with Santos. Our sturdy senior is looking forward to a meet-and-greet, and would be happy to have a young or older female dog in his new home.

About Santos

What life with Santos looks like

Santos is a senior rhodesian ridgeback dog waiting at Tierheim Koblenz in Koblenz.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Santos, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Santos?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Koblenz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Santos on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Santos if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Koblenz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Santos already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Santos isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Koblenz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Santos and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
