Sara

Female · Adult · 6 years

Breed: Poodle Age: 10-03-2020 Other characteristics: Needs another dog Can get along with other dogs: yes, absolutely essential Can get along with cats: ? Can live in an apartment: no, needs a house with a garden Can get along with children: no Sara was adopted during the coronavirus pandemic. She was initially purchased as a puppy for her mother, who ultimately experienced too much stress due to Sara’s fears. As a result, Sara was given up. During the first few days, Sara didn’t move at all. She was scared, didn’t want any contact, and there were far too many stimuli at the shelter. Sara took small steps forward, but she remained very anxious. Fortunately, there was a foster home where Sara could go, and here she’s feeling better and better. Another dog lives at the foster home, and Sara really enjoys having this companion. Thanks to the other dog, Sara is now more confident, blossoms more quickly, and everyday things seem much less scary. Without another dog, it would be a different story: Sara really needs to be placed with a stable, calm dog. The foster family is already allowed to pet Sara. She even jumps onto the sofa herself and snuggles up against the foster family. She loves playing with the family’s other dog and expertly licks the lickymat clean. Being alone without the other dog is difficult for her; being alone with the other dog, however, is no problem at all. She’s house-trained, doesn’t destroy anything, and remains calm when left alone. Walks don’t happen very often yet—this causes extra tension and is built up in very small steps. She’s now brave enough to approach visitors, but a busy social life isn’t for Sara at all. She also doesn’t enjoy going everywhere with people: a quiet life, full of predictability and definitely with another, smaller dog, is ideal for Sara. The foster family describes her as inseparable—whether it’s from the other dog at the foster home or from the foster mom herself.

About Sara

What life with Sara looks like

Sara is a small adult dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
