Saxon

Male · Young · 1 year

Saxon is happy and excitable when meeting new people, although his new family may want to help him learn to keep all four paws on the floor. He is currently struggling with being left alone, so any time apart will need to be introduced slowly once he has settled into his new home. Saxon may potentially enjoy having walking buddies, but as he is currently under-socialised, introductions should be calm, gradual and carefully managed to help him develop good manners. He could live with secondary school-aged children who are comfortable around a bouncy, high-energy dog. Saxon is a super-smart boy who would thrive with a family that understands working breeds and is willing to continue his training. In the right hands, he has the potential to be a fantastic, highly trainable companion. Saxon is a 1-year & 8 months old German Shepherd who is looking for a patient, understanding home where he can continue to grow in confidence and strength. He is finding kennel life quite stressful and would really benefit from a settled environment where he can relax. Saxon came to us very underweight and with some muscle wastage, so it is important that his exercise is built up gradually to help him regain his weight, fitness and strength. He enjoys having a good sniff around and playing with toys, particularly when exploring new environments. Saxon is a very intelligent boy who loves his toys and has lots of potential to learn. He can become very excited when out on his lead and will need continued work on his lead walking skills. He is happy to wear a harness, and using treats can help keep him focused and make walks a positive experience.

About Saxon

What life with Saxon looks like

Saxon is a young adult dog waiting at Dogs Trust Basildon in Wickford.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Saxon, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Saxon?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Basildon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Saxon on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Saxon if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Basildon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Saxon already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Saxon isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Basildon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Saxon and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
