Schiefschnabel

Mixed Breed · Male · 3 years

Type: Great Alexandersparrow. Gender: male. Color: wild-colored. Age: adult. In the animal shelter since: 27.10.2025 HTV-Number: 634_S_25 Schiefschnabel is a friendly fellow who does not shy away from human proximity but also appreciates the presence of females of his kind. He wishes for an appropriately matched home with at least one companion and a large aviary with multiple retreat, seating, and climbing options. A daily free flight is also an absolute dream for this parrot. Attention must always be paid to the right temperature and lighting, especially in year-round outdoor housing. A bathing option, enrichment opportunities, and nesting boxes are a must. Fresh water should always be available. On the menu are seeds and daily fresh food. Food and drinking water containers must be cleaned daily, and the droppings must be removed daily. Drafts and temperature fluctuations should always be avoided. Unfortunately, the sparrow-male has a crooked beak, a so-called cross-bill, where the beak halves do not stand straight. Therefore, the lower beak is unevenly worn and should be regularly trimmed by a specialist. Otherwise, Schiefschnabel is fit, fully flight-capable, and very curious. Here in the animal shelter, he has found a companion in the large Alexandersparrow dam Robina, with whom he also likes to go out together.

About Schiefschnabel

What life with Schiefschnabel looks like

Schiefschnabel is a large adult mixed breed bird waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

Note from the shelter: Cross beak deformity requiring regular professional beak trimming

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Schiefschnabel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Schiefschnabel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Schiefschnabel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Schiefschnabel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Schiefschnabel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Schiefschnabel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Schiefschnabel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
