SCRUFF

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 13 years

A male podenco, abandoned in a blatant act of cruelty. He had a locked chain with a lock around his neck, showing the treatment he had received. No doubt, as he was already old, the hunter who mistreated him abandoned him to avoid taking care of him and no longer being useful for hunting. And of course, without identification with a chip. He was thin and his coat was dull, but he turned out to be a very affectionate, kind, and grateful little dog. We did a blood test and it showed that he had Leishmaniasis and Rickettsia, but his organs were fine, which predicts a very good recovery. We immediately started treating him and his improvement was evident, he has energy and a desire to run around. His coat now shines and he is very happy, no one will mistreat him ever again, he can eat whatever he wants and play with his companions in the enclosure. We will make sure he has everything he needs and if he finds a family, he will give them many years of joy, he would adapt to any family. SCRUFF has amazing energy, he is friendly, affectionate, and fun, a perfect little dog for any family. He is an older dog, he may have been born around January 2013, but he is energetic like a young boy. He walks very well and would perfectly endure hikes in the mountains, the beach,…. you just have to look at him and love him. He needs a little luck.

ES·Show original

About SCRUFF

What life with SCRUFF looks like

SCRUFF is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Naturaleza y Animales in Spain.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting SCRUFF, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about SCRUFF?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Naturaleza y Animales handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw SCRUFF on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt SCRUFF if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Naturaleza y Animales will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is SCRUFF already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if SCRUFF isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Naturaleza y Animales early rather than rehoming privately; they know SCRUFF and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
