Selene

Chihuahua · Female · Adult · 6 years

Selene—a very delicate, gentle, and sensitive female dog seeks her home. She particularly needs time, peace, and people with understanding of her nature. One can see Selene in many small situations that she has likely experienced a lot in her previous life. She reacts insecurely to some things, such as hectic movements, strollers, people, or certain objects like bottles. Therefore, we are looking for a particularly peaceful home without much chaos and hustle, where she can arrive at her own pace. She has shown a preference for men so far. With familiar people, Selene gains trust quickly with enough peace and then shows her incredibly loving side. She loves closeness, cuddles, and prefers to sleep with her person. Once she has gained trust, she orients herself closely to her person and enjoys quiet moments together very much. She is an unusually gentle female dog. Even in great fear, she remains quiet, does not bark, and does not charge forward. Despite this, Selene brings some insecurities and reacts fearfully to many things. Especially without another dog by her side, much outside of her comfort zone is difficult for her. A confident, peaceful, and fear-free single dog would greatly help her and give her the security she needs. But she is also conceivable as a solo princess. On quiet, unexciting stretches, Selene already runs wonderfully on a leash. I think once she is fully healthy, she will also enjoy larger rounds very much. She is not a couch potato. In addition to Selene, a playful and eager-to-learn female dog is also hidden. Especially with toys, she really warms up. She also has fun playing with a suitable, similarly-sized dog buddy. She loves food, which helps her learn and is good because she still has some growing to do. In a quiet environment, she works enthusiastically, has already learned a small trick, and participates motivated in physio exercises. She shows great joy in learning and wants to please. Day by day, Selene opens up more, and her development is already clearly visible. In a suitable home, she will gradually shed many of her fears and become more secure. Selene can already spend short periods alone without problems and behaves calmly and relaxed. For Selene, we are looking for a very peaceful home without small children, preferably with quiet people, singles, or fit individuals who can give her the time she needs. Whoever accompanies Selene with patience, understanding, and a lot of peace will be rewarded with an incredibly loving, gentle, and special female dog who visibly enjoys the closeness to her person and gratefully accepts every support. Please keep in mind that the Chihuahua is among the breeds prone to inbreeding. At the moment, Selene is doing well, but no one can guarantee that this will continue. This animal can be anxious in unfamiliar situations.

About Selene

What life with Selene looks like

Selene is a large adult chihuahua dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Selene, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Selene?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Selene on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Selene if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Selene already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Selene isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Selene and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
