Serdelek

Male · Adult · 6 years

Serdelek is a beautiful, approximately 6-year-old terrier-type dog. His beginning at the animal shelter was quite difficult - he didn't trust us, barked at everyone who approached his crate, hid and ran away when he saw us... We don't know his history (except that he was left tied to a tree), but we think that Serdelek was a pet dog and someone specifically abandoned him. Fortunately, Serdelek soon opened up, started going for walks with us, playing, enjoying seeing volunteers and caregivers, climbing on our knees and demanding pats and treats. A new home and a chance for a better life in a house quickly appeared. Unfortunately, this joy lasted... 9 days. That's how long Serdelek stayed in the new home. After adoption, it turned out that Serdelek guards his resources - his toys and can bite in the process. The family had one consultation with a behaviorist, and then without further attempts to work with the dog, the dog was returned to the animal shelter. It was a huge blow for Serdelko, who lost trust in people again and closed himself off. We cannot change what happened, but we can draw lessons from this situation. Therefore, we know that Serdelek is not a dog for everyone - despite his small body, he must be taken seriously, must have clearly defined rules and boundaries, and must remain under the supervision of a behaviorist. Due to the biting incidents, he cannot live in a home where there are or will be children or other animals. His new caretakers must have experience working with a difficult dog and awareness that working on resource guarding is not always quick and easy. Patience, self-control, consistency - these are the qualities that the candidate for the new caregiver must demonstrate. So, once again, we are looking for a home for this small-sized, but big-hearted and strong-willed dog.

About Serdelek

What life with Serdelek looks like

Serdelek is a small adult dog waiting at Schronisko Na Paluchu in Warsaw.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding behavior, requires behavioral specialist supervision, history of biting when protecting toys

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Serdelek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Serdelek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Na Paluchu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Serdelek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Serdelek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Na Paluchu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Serdelek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Serdelek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Na Paluchu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Serdelek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
