Shadow

Belgian Shepherd · Female · Young · 1 year

Meet lovely Shadow our pocket Mali with a big heart! Shadow had a rough start to life and has found the transition to our busy London site quite overwhelming. She has little experience being on lead and the sounds of the outside world frighten her. She has shown massive improvements day by day and is slowly becoming the happy little Mali we hoped she would be! Shadow was understandably a little nervous around people and handling when she first arrived on site but has quickly warmed up and made friends with everyone on site. She is very food motivated but also enjoys a good butt scratch! She is a sweet little girl and mostly keeps all 4 paws on the ground. As she can be a little nervous of handling and loud environments, if to live with children, Shadow would be looking to live with teenagers. Shadow has shown some lovely social skills around other dogs and has gained confidence from them. She enjoys a play but is able to take breaks on her own, she will also give warranted tell offs if the other dog is being too much. She could live with a well matched dog friend following successful introductions. She has shown some chase behaviours as to be expected of her breed so homes with other smaller animals, including cats, would need to be carefully considered. As Shadow is very under-experienced with the outside world and finds it all very frightening she is looking for a quiet home, ideally in the countryside with a private secure garden to help her build her confidence. Shadow has shown the capability to jump quite high so will need a garden fence at least 6ft high. Shadow is a wonderful smart little dog looking for an experienced patient and quiet home who are dedicated in continuing to build her confidence. The road may be long with Shadow but every small success will be so rewarding and she will return your love in kind! If you have already completed our online rehoming form and would like to know more about Shadow, you can e-mail our rehoming team on to register your interest. tch for the dog in question.

About Shadow

What life with Shadow looks like

Shadow is a large young adult belgian shepherd dog waiting at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Shadow, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Shadow?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Shadow on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Shadow if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Shadow already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Shadow isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Shadow and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
