Adopt Shankar

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Young · 3 years

Shankar stands for “Shiva, the god of Hinduism.” Whether this was intentional when naming the young male dog, we do not know, but it is also irrelevant, for names are just sound and smoke, and the beauty lies in the eye of the beholder – whether it be the name or the appearance of Shankar. Perhaps a little teddy bear mixed in with a little German Shepherd and a whole lot of “mixed breed” can be found in Shankar. Unique is Shankar in any case. Found with his siblings in the north of Bucharest, as is often the case, on an abandoned lot. All the puppy siblings were brought to the animal shelter Odai in November 2023, where they initially hid in a corner, frightened. No one knows what trauma they might have suffered on the street or during capture. But the volunteers on site are doing good work, and through spending time with other puppies in the yard, who may have been there for a while and are already known to the volunteer helpers, the new arrivals also start to observe each other, and the process of trust begins almost on its own. Although still shy, Shankar is a more reserved puppy, but he shows interest in everything and enjoys being with people. For example, he already lets himself be fitted with a collar and leash without any problems and enjoys his run with the other puppy buddies on the dog playground. Shankar shows excellent social behavior and is never aggressive. He loves to be carefree with the others and plays very much with them. Every Sunday, he currently has the chance to really run around. We think that Shankar will warm up to considerate people who have a lot of time for him quite quickly. In the animal shelter, in the limited time of the volunteers, all dogs should have something, which is why there is definitely not enough time for the individual. For the more reserved and shy specimens, the process of gaining trust takes longer. If Shankar had the opportunity to be in the center of his new home and have people just for himself soon, interest would turn to affection, and he would feel like the happiest dog. For Shankar, we are looking for considerate and quiet people who have a quiet home and who give Shankar all the time in the world to settle in. Shankar will never have seen a vacuum cleaner, a lawn mower, or a kitchen appliance in action, so he needs to learn everything carefully. What is important is that he gets the time he needs and that the people who choose him believe in him. Then it will probably go quickly until Shankar feels secure and comfortable with his people.

About Shankar

What life with Shankar looks like

Shankar is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Shankar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Shankar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Shankar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Shankar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Shankar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Shankar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Shankar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
