Shiro

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Shiro is a neutered tomcat at around six years old, seeking a quiet and understanding home. The handsome apartment cat currently shows a reserved demeanor at the animal shelter, not particularly comfortable with the unfamiliar environment and the many impressions. For many cats, daily life at the animal shelter means stress, and it's also difficult for Shiro to fully relax and reveal his true nature. Therefore, we wish to find people for him who can give him the time he needs to settle in and build trust. Once Shiro has become accustomed to his trusted people and his surroundings, he enjoys the company of humans. However, it is important to him that he can still have a say in when and how much contact he wants. He gladly accepts cuddles but also clearly shows when he has enough attention and would rather have some peace. His future owners should respect these signals and give him the opportunity to retreat whenever he needs to. Those who understand cats and can read their body language will have an honest and character-strong companion with Shiro. As an apartment cat, Shiro knows the life within four walls and thus seeks a home without a yard. He requires sufficient retreat options, cozy lying spots, and people who do not have immediate expectations of him. After a move, he likely needs some time to adjust and gain security. Patience, calmness, and a regulated daily routine will help him build trust and feel comfortable in his new home. Shiro is particularly suited for people who give a cat the necessary space and enjoy watching a relationship grow step by step. He is not a tomcat who immediately opens up to everyone, but one whose trust must be earned.

DE·Show original

Wer ihm dies

About Shiro

What life with Shiro looks like

Shiro is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. in Dormagen.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Shiro, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Shiro?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Shiro on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Shiro if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Shiro already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Shiro isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Shiro and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
