Shorty

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 9 months

20.06.2026: Shorty is no longer quite as tiny as he once was and is still waiting at his foster home for inquiries. Here’s his description from his foster parents: Shorty is an intelligent, quick-learning, and playful dog. He knows basic commands such as “sit” and “stay,” is house-trained, and travels comfortably in the car. He already walks well on the leash and proves to be an attentive companion. Shorty especially enjoys being close to his people and loves long cuddle sessions. At the same time, he brings a healthy dose of curiosity and playfulness. With strangers, Shorty needs some time to build trust. Therefore, his new family should give him the opportunity to get to know new situations at his own pace. Interactions with unfamiliar dogs should also be approached carefully and with the necessary experience. He’s accustomed to cats and gets along well with them. We’re looking for a understanding home for Shorty—one that offers him security, clear routines, and plenty of affection. Whoever gives him this chance will gain a loyal and watchful companion by their side. Thanks to his "Kangal" heritage, Shorty is characterized by his loyalty. Often, many people aren’t familiar with this breed and therefore have “wrong” expectations. He’s not the type to joyfully run up to people and let himself be petted. This isn’t really a problem per se, but it’s often perceived that way. Right now, it’s still hard to distinguish between fears/insecurities and genuine character traits. Maybe he won’t be everyone’s favorite—but he’ll certainly become someone’s favorite. Of course, he’s still immature and half-baby, let’s not forget that. When we’re at home and there’s no visitors around, he’s just a completely “normal” young dog who’s discovering life, testing boundaries, and making us laugh over and over again. __________ 24.05.2026: Little Shorty has already traveled the world while waiting at his foster home for a forever home—well, at least he’s made it as far as Holland. The six-month-old, neutered male is still searching for people who’ll continue teaching him the basics of dog ownership and preparing him for life. Shorty knows dogs of both sexes and lives with his foster parents alongside the big female dog Aella (also from our shelter) and cats. He also travels comfortably in the car. In some situations, he’s still a bit unsure. We’re working on that, and it’s important to keep working on it. Raising a young dog takes time, patience, and a sunny disposition. If you’d like to meet Shorty in person, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone or email. ________ The four young Bulgarian pups are siblings and were allowed to come to our shelter while searching for a responsible home. They’re all quite bold and not at all shy. They still need to learn how to wear a harness and walk on a leash—but our diligent walking companions are working hard on that. Puffboy, Shorty, Shiny, and Sunny are incredibly sweet young dogs, and of course, a little more time and patience are needed in their training.

About Shorty

What life with Shorty looks like

Shorty is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Mayen in Mayen.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Shorty, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Shorty?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Mayen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Shorty on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Shorty if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Mayen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Shorty already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Shorty isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Mayen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Shorty and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
