Silja

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Shy, calm, friendly, curious, social VIDEO Update April 2026: Silja is becoming more and more confident. Even visitors are welcomed. This was unimaginable at the beginning. She gets along well with other dogs and really enjoys being together. She is easy to call and is often allowed to walk without a leash. She would love to be a second dog in a family where she would be with them most of the time. Update June 2024: Silja has adapted well to her foster home. She is still shy, especially towards men. She is open towards her primary caregiver and allows herself to be petted. She is very compatible with other dogs and loves to play and run around in the garden. She enjoys car rides and walks. She walks well on a leash and is very curious in familiar areas. New areas or loud noises scare her. A securely fenced garden would be important for Silja. A nice only dog can already be in her future home. Silja can also be kept as a single dog. Silja came to us very thin and weak. Her eyes showed pure fear, and she would have liked to disappear. Her blood test showed that she is positive for leishmaniasis, which often reduces the chances of adoption to zero. Silja is well managed with medication and has really recovered well. She is shy towards strangers and steps back. She will need some time to build trust with her primary caregiver. When Silja is on the leash and goes for a walk, she is curious and interested in many things. Petting is no longer associated with great fear. We are looking for a very experienced dog home, rural and quiet, with a securely fenced garden and people who have a lot of patience and give Silja the time she needs. They are all vaccinated, microchipped, and have an EU passport. They are checked for Mediterranean diseases according to their age. See information on our homepage. Every adopted dog makes room for one of the dogs that have to live their lives hungry and emaciated. This animal can be anxious in unfamiliar situations.

AUFENTHALTSORT

About Silja

What life with Silja looks like

Silja is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at A.C.E. Animal Compassion Europe - Tiere in Not e.V. in Greece.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇷Adopting from Greece

Greek shelters often partner with Northern European rescue groups for placements. Animals are sterilized, vaccinated, and chipped before adoption. Fees vary widely depending on whether the shelter is municipal or NGO-run.

Frequently asked

Adopting Silja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Silja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. A.C.E. Animal Compassion Europe - Tiere in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Silja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Silja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — A.C.E. Animal Compassion Europe - Tiere in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Silja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Silja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with A.C.E. Animal Compassion Europe - Tiere in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Silja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
