Sissi

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 4 months

Female dog SISSI, born approx. 04/2023, shoulder height approx. 55 cm, weight approx. 18.8 kilos, basket sought from now on. Sissi is a very special young female dog. She currently lives free on the grounds of our partner animal shelter and is allowed to move about there independently. She likes to make her rounds across the grounds, look at everything there is to discover, and is always curious about what is happening. One could almost say Sissi has found her very own little job there: she regularly keeps an eye on everything. 😄 Sissi is also quite resourceful. When staff walk across the grounds with bags or totes, or set them down somewhere, her curiosity is immediately aroused. She likes to check whether there might be something exciting or edible inside – and if you don't pay attention, she sometimes helps herself. So Sissi is a bright young dog who observes her surroundings attentively and likes to be right in the middle of things. In general, she gets along well with other dogs and copes well with life at the shelter. Unfortunately, we can't yet say much more about her character at this time, as she has so far mainly known life on the shelter grounds and the wider world is still unfamiliar to her. Sadly, Sissi's leishmaniasis is clearly visible at the moment. The disease has greatly changed her appearance, but we very much hope that with the right medical care her physical condition can improve as well. Leishmaniasis does not mean Sissi cannot have a bright future – she simply needs people who are willing to take on her illness and provide her with the necessary treatment and care. We wish for Sissi people who see, behind her currently worn appearance, the curious, independent and lovable dog she is. People who give her the chance to get to know life outside the shelter and show her how wonderful a home of her own can be. 🐾 We do not place animals in very urban residential areas or with families with toddlers. Please submit an adoption inquiry only if adoption at the time stated in the text is possible and you have already discussed welcoming a new family member with your family (and, where applicable, other involved parties such as employers, landlords, or temporary caregivers). Please note that the dogs described here are currently in their large foster placement or in the shelter, in a limited, safe environment, and have little contact with other people or environmental stimuli outside the grounds. The descriptions are based on behavior in this familiar environment. Puppies and young dogs in particular are still developing their character. A successful settling-in period in a new home requires time, patience, and loving guidance so they can get used to the new surroundings and various stimuli and grow into confident dogs.

About Sissi

What life with Sissi looks like

Sissi is a large puppy mixed breed dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sissi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sissi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sissi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sissi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Sissi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sissi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sissi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
