Skaja

Female · Young · 3 years

A small 5 kg dog, along with 16 other dogs, was removed from a home by the PVD when the owner was hospitalized. It is unclear whether the dogs were intentionally bred or if this was another place where dogs were allowed to breed uncontrollably. The dogs were not malnourished or sick, but they were not socialized. Walking on a leash, being around strangers, and being alone without the rest of the pack were terrifying for them. Fortunately, these dogs, although afraid of everything, did not bite. Three-year-old Skaja entered the shelter already pregnant and gave birth after two days; unfortunately, the doctors had to intervene to help the puppies see the light of day, but two puppies died a few hours later. The surviving puppy of Skaja has gone home and Skaja herself can look for her family. She is a playful, affectionate little dog. We have taught her to walk on a leash, but if there is a complete stranger on the leash, Skaja can get confused and scared. She is suitable for adoption in a patient family (without young children) with previous experience in caring for dogs. The girl should not only be loved and pampered - also forgive her misdeeds, which, according to her age, will still be - but also properly socialized. Let her be a brave and clever girl not only in her own people's home, but also in society, in public places.

About Skaja

What life with Skaja looks like

Skaja is a young adult dog waiting at Labās Mājas in Riga.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Frequently asked

Adopting Skaja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Skaja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Labās Mājas handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Skaja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Skaja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Labās Mājas will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Skaja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Skaja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Labās Mājas early rather than rehoming privately; they know Skaja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (LV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
