Izmir Is Looking for Her Home – or an End-of-Life Foster Placement ❤️ Over 4 years in the shelter is enough. Our Izmir, affectionately called Izi, has been waiting with us for over four years for her people. She is a Kangal female, born on 15.01.2021, and she brings about 55 kilograms of livestock-guardian power with her. We so very much wish that Izmir could finally experience what it is like to have a home of her own. A place where she is no longer just a resident of the shelter, but can simply be Izmir. Izmir is a typical livestock guardian and accordingly very watchful. Toward strangers, she is initially skeptical. No one should simply enter her territory unannounced – Izi takes her job as a guardian quite seriously. People she knows and trusts, however, get to experience a completely different Izmir: she is friendly, open, and incredibly cuddly. She loves her people and enjoys attention and petting very much. ⚠️ Izmir has a pronounced resource-guarding issue. She defends her food, but also her own resting spots and her toys. With good management and a responsible approach, this behavior is very manageable with her. It is important to know her limits, to respect them, and to give her clear structure. When meeting other dogs, Izmir generally behaves properly and can be led well. With female dogs, however, she has clear problems. Encounters with females can become difficult for her and must be managed and controlled accordingly. Living with a confident male dog is something we can generally envision, depending on compatibility. Here, chemistry is what matters – getting to know each other and a suitable introduction are of course prerequisites. Other animals should not live in her new home. Children should be at least 16 years old and bring a safe and responsible approach to dogs. A peaceful retirement would be her greatest wish. Unfortunately, Izmir has a major health challenge. Her hip is severely damaged, and surgery is no longer possible. Getting up is difficult for her, and she can no longer manage long walks. That is exactly why we do not wish for her an active household, but a quiet place where she can simply be. Izi would most likely love to lie in a beautiful garden, keep an eye on her domain, enjoy the sun, and now and then go to her people to be cuddled thoroughly. She no longer needs big adventures. She needs calm, security, love, and a place where she is allowed to stay. Home or End-of-Life Foster Placement Sought We know that Izmir, because of her size, her livestock-guardian traits, and her health issues, is not an easy candidate for rehoming. But over four years in the shelter is simply enough. That is why we are urgently looking for a home for our Izi – or, very gladly, a loving end-of-life foster placement as well. For an end-of-life foster placement, we cover Izmir's veterinary costs. We are hoping for people with experience with large, strong-willed dogs and, ideally, with livestock guardians. People who understand that a Kangal is not a classic family dog, respect her vigilance, and at the same time want to get to know her incredibly cuddly side. Izmir has waited so long. She should not have to spend her entire life in the shelter. 🏡 Who will finally give our Izi her own domain, a cozy garden, and a place where she can arrive for good? After more than four years, it is time for Izmir's happy ending. 📩 Feel free to get in touch to arrange a get-to-know-you meeting, by calling the number for a personal conversation:

About Izmir

What life with Izmir looks like

Izmir is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Pforzheim in Pforzheim.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Izmir, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Izmir?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Pforzheim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Izmir on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Izmir if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Pforzheim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Izmir already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Izmir isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Pforzheim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Izmir and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
