Smilla

Mixed Breed · Female

Smilla is a 5-year-old British Shorthair who we are giving up to loving hands. She is vaccinated, chipped, spayed, and in good health; her teeth have also been taken care of. Smilla is experienced with dogs and can easily be left alone for longer periods. She has always been indoors at night and is not used to life outside. Smilla has a strong desire for freedom and always tries to leave our garden. Since our home is surrounded by several streets, we cannot safely allow her this wish here. If she is not allowed outside, she unfortunately responds with uncleanliness, making the situation increasingly burdensome for all involved. Therefore, we are looking for a home for Smilla where she can safely go outside - ideally with a secure garden/run or in a very quiet, traffic-free environment where she can safely explore her territory. Children should not live in the household, as Smilla is not familiar with children and is very afraid of them. She is familiar with dogs, however. Smilla is a loving cat who simply needs a home that better suits her needs. We sincerely wish for people who will give her the time, security, and freedom she needs. For questions, please contact me personally, Birgit Mona

About Smilla

What life with Smilla looks like

Smilla is a large adult mixed breed cat waiting at Eifeltierheim Altrich in Altrich.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Smilla, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Smilla?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Eifeltierheim Altrich handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Smilla on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Smilla if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Eifeltierheim Altrich will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Smilla already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Smilla isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Eifeltierheim Altrich early rather than rehoming privately; they know Smilla and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
