Solo

Shih Tzu · Male · Senior · 9 years

Solo, born in December 2016, is a lovely boy who has come to Windyway due to his owner's declining health and changes in her working hours. She was very sad to part with him but knew she wasn't coping well and she has relinquished him knowing that he needs more time, attention and vet care than she's able to provide. He is a cross Shih Tzu/ Bichon Frise (Zuchon) with a lovely character - he is really loving and happy boy who would love a one to one home where he can bond with a new person and become the centre of their world. When he arrived his ears were badly infected ( his vet records showed he had suffered recurring infections which had always been treated) and we began a fairly intensive regime of treatment for this as well as for a healing ulcer in his eye. He also has sensitive skin - his owner had realised that this is worse if he eats chicken and so he is happily settled on a chicken free diet, and he has baths twice a week - this seems to be keeping him comfortable. There may be other environmental triggers which come and go with the seasons but he is currently having antiinflammatory medication daily He has had a big dental and is recovering well (October 2026) His ears have improved massively and the drops rae now down to twice a week, his eye drops have been paused because the ulcer has healed but he then got dry eye so is having different drops for that, and he has completed a course of vaccinations. The vet has advised that he sticks with the same routines for the time being and is rechecked in mid November. This is what Solo's owner said about him: Solo hasn’t really spent much time with small children. He has growled once at my grandaughter but that’s when she fell on him. He’s house trained but does sometimes have an odd accident when the window cleaner is around. He loves his toys and cuddles them. He likes licky mats and puzzle games but isn’t that great with working them out but he tries. Not great with recall so keep him on a lead unless in a big field or beach. Walks nice on a lead, sometimes barks at other dogs if they’re in his face or bouncy. Loves cuddles and behind his ears tickling and tummy rubs too. I don’t feed poultry in food as he is slightly allergic. Grain free to avoid staining. Likes to stay close and follow you around the house. His command for toilet is ‘be quick’ which he will generally do his business on command if needed. He hates being alone but isn’t destructive and doesn’t bark or cause issues, he just gets a bit over excited when you get home. He doesn’t like going out in cold and wet weather, he doesn’t like fireworks or thunder but is ok if you close curtains and put tv or radio on. Would suit adults or a family with teenagers. Preference would be retired person/people who are home a lot and can give him love he deserves, he a gentle soul and not demanding with anything. He’s adorable and would make someone a lovely companion. He’s my best mate and I’m devastated to make the decision to rehome him.

About Solo

What life with Solo looks like

Solo is a large senior shih tzu dog waiting at Windyway Animal Rescue in Macclesfield.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Solo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Solo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Windyway Animal Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Solo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Solo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Windyway Animal Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Solo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Solo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Windyway Animal Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Solo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
