‘OLD DOG OF THE WEEK’ FEATURES NEW PHOTOS AND A FRESH WRITE-UP FOR AN OVERLOOKED OLDIE THAT HAS BEEN ON OUR WEBSITE FOR A WHILE BUT IS STILL WAITING FOR A NEW HOME. Please help Spencer by sharing this page! Spencer is a sweet little Patterdale Terrier of 10 years, in the care of Rescue Remedies at their boarding kennels near Gatwick, on the Surrey/West Sussex border. He wants to be the only pet in an adult-only home, although he's very friendly with everyone when out and about. Spencer does have to know someone before they can touch him but he's happy to take treats from anyone at all! On volunteer walker said of him, "Spencer always collects friends – people who meet him are just captivated by him. His first port of call is always the walkers' area as he hopes to meet lots of people who will indulge him by giving him treats. This little dog loves treats! If he doesn't get enough he will tell you!" Spencer enjoys the company of other dogs on walks. He's an exceptionally calm dog for a Patterdale, or any Terrier, and is content to go past other dogs, traffic, horses etc. He does still need owners who are aware of Terrier traits and keep him on the lead in case his instinct takes him off down some narrow space for an adventure. Spencer is a joy to walk as he's so friendly to all and he loves going in water. He sometimes objects to mud and has to be carried. Another volunteer said, "I let him choose where he wanted to go which was the woodland paddock. I threw balls for him which he chased and then accumulated in a little pile. Spencer let me know when he had had enough and we wandered around the grounds where he found a ball and had a few rolls in the grass." Spencer is feeling his age a bit these days. He has lots of love to give and lots of fun still to be had but he feels the cold and really wants a proper home with soft furnishings. He loves human company as well and is very cuddly with his favourite people. If you think Spencer might be the new best friend for you, please contact Rescue Remedies as follows: Read about the Rescue Remedies rehoming process here… …then fill in their homing questionnaire here. Please say you saw Spencer featured as Old Dog of the Week on the Oldies Club website. This replaces Spencer's original page dated 26 November 2026.

About Spencer

What life with Spencer looks like

Spencer is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at The Oldies Club in United Kingdom.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spencer, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spencer?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Oldies Club handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spencer on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spencer if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Oldies Club will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spencer already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spencer isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Oldies Club early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spencer and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
