Spencer

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

Spencer – a puppy in a sheepskin! The lovable Spencer is a Serra de Aires-mixed breed (Portuguese German Shepherd). He was surrendered to an animal shelter in Portugal a few months ago because the elderly lady who had been caring for him had to move to a nursing home. The long-haired pup not only looks charming but also has a fantastic personality. He is extremely people-oriented, clingy, cuddly, and always in a good mood. He approaches all small and large people joyfully and enjoys cuddles very much. Sometimes he also likes to play around to draw attention to himself. The handsome fawn is still quite fit and very lively for his age, but he is not the youngest anymore and has some early signs of age: his hearing and eyes are not 100%, and he has mild arthritis in one front leg. For walks, Spencer is always enthusiastic, but the sturdy doggie doesn’t need long strenuous hikes anymore. Spencer walks well on a leash and is very attuned to his human. As he can no longer see well, he sometimes reacts insecurely to approaching dogs or people with umbrellas or similar. Once he recognizes who is coming towards him, he calms down and continues on his way undeterred. So far, Spencer has gotten along well with his fellow animals, making him a good candidate for a second dog. However, Spencer also does just fine without other dogs, as his human is the center of his world. Spencer passed the cat test in Portugal with flying colors. We are looking for a home that is as level as possible for Spencer. Ideally, he would be placed with some retired, sturdy seniors who would like to give him a few more beautiful years. The slightly aged dream dog will enrich the lives of his humans through his charming nature and his playful antics. Currently, Spencer lives in 35043 Marburg – Cappel, where he can be visited by appointment. He was also introduced to a German veterinarian there and had a complete check-up. All values were very good for his age. He needs only permanent eye drops. Spencer is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, tested for Mediterranean diseases, and has an EU passport.

About Spencer

What life with Spencer looks like

Spencer is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Hundehilfe Portugal in Speyer.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spencer, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spencer?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundehilfe Portugal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spencer on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spencer if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundehilfe Portugal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spencer already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spencer isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundehilfe Portugal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spencer and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
