Spike

European Shorthair · Male

Spike – cautious red tabby seeks patient humans &;&; Spike is a beautiful red tabby tomcat who came to us at the animal shelter as a stray. Unfortunately, we know very little about his past – but many signs indicate that he has had hardly any close contact with humans so far and had to live at a distance. When Spike arrived, he was initially very shy and reserved. However, he has already made great progress: he has settled in a bit and now allows himself to be stroked when approached calmly and patiently. Nevertheless, Spike still needs people who understand that trust does not come naturally to him. Spike is not a cat who immediately approaches everyone – but one who needs time to feel safe and to gradually open up to his people. Once you have gained his trust, though, there is a sensitive tomcat inside who wants to learn that closeness can be something beautiful. For Spike, we therefore wish for a quiet home without children, as too much hustle and bustle would quickly overwhelm him. People with patience, calmness, and understanding for reserved cats would be ideal for him. As an outdoor cat, Spike will later need the opportunity to be outside again after a longer settling-in period – preferably in a quiet environment. Spike is not looking for perfect people – but people with a heart, who will give him the time he needs. Anyone willing to walk this path with him will witness how cautious reserve gradually turns into genuine trust. &;&; If you are seriously interested, we will gladly arrange a get-to-know-you appointment by phone at .

About Spike

What life with Spike looks like

Spike is a large adult european shorthair cat waiting at Wally-Bangert-Tierheim Lohr am Main in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spike, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spike?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Wally-Bangert-Tierheim Lohr am Main handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spike on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spike if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Wally-Bangert-Tierheim Lohr am Main will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spike already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spike isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Wally-Bangert-Tierheim Lohr am Main early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spike and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
