Adopt Sue

Jack Russell Terrier · Female · Young · 1 year

Sue is reactive around all other dogs and will need to be walked in quieter locations, remaining on lead at all times when out and about. Her new owners will need to feel confident and comfortable managing her reactivity and committed to helping her continue to make positive progress. Because of this, Sue is looking for an adult-only home or one with older teenage children who understand and are comfortable around reactive dogs. She cannot live with cats, dogs, or small furries. Sue has a medium energy level and loves her walks and enrichment, but above all she is a typical young terrier who thrives on companionship, play, and affection. With commitment and patience from her new family, Sue has all the potential to grow into an amazing and loyal companion. Sue is an 18-month-old terrier cross with a playful personality and lots of love to give. She is confident meeting new people and enjoys being around her humans, whether that’s playing with toys, going for walks, or curling up for a fuss after a busy day. Sue has come into our care as a stray, so she will need a patient and understanding family who can help guide her through family life and continue her basic training once she has settled in. She can eventually be left alone for a few hours as she does settle in her kennel but gradually build this up over time when she first goes home. Sue would benefit from a home with access to a secure private outdoor space where she can safely relax and explore away from the stress of encountering other dogs.

About Sue

What life with Sue looks like

Sue is a small young adult jack russell terrier dog waiting at Dogs Trust Basildon in Wickford.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sue, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sue?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Basildon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sue on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sue if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Basildon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sue already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sue isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Basildon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sue and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
