Sumsi

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

Sumsi was finally rehomed with your new family in February 2017. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. I am female, spayed, microchipped and born in 2012. I am about 55cm tall. I have been waiting for a new home since September 2016. This is what my caretakers say about me: Sumsi is a surrendered dog from the surrounding area, as the owner was overwhelmed by their living situation and could no longer adequately care for their much-loved animals. Sumsi came to us with her mother Salami, with whom she has been together since birth. We also place both of them separately, but it would be a dream to place them as a pair. Then you have to place both, even without the other being able to enjoy life. Salami is naturally older... this means that you have to protect her from suddenly having to cope alone. Both are social dogs and get along with other animals, even if it seems different behind the fence. Upon arriving here, Sumsi quickly became a popular walking companion, although her leash control was initially poor. She likes people of all sizes and ages and is full of joy. Thanks to the previous owners, Sumsi had regular contact with other dogs, and gets along with dogs of all sizes and ages, except for exceptions. Despite her exuberant temperament, she has good basic obedience, and certainly can enjoy nature after appropriate training, which helps with her energy levels. Because Sumsi is very enthusiastic, you just need to press the right buttons. Sumsi really wants to please, but her exuberance often gets in the way; she must especially learn to control herself. She loves cuddling, playing, sports and has a fundamentally good character that just needs to be uncovered. She knows the basic commands and with proper guidance, Sumsi can become an absolute family dream. There is nothing about her that cannot be solved with consistent training. She loves work, movement, playing with other animals and is not a lazy dog. Cuddles are also not missing, in the core of her heart she is sensitive. A life as a second dog would be ideal, ideally with Mama Salami. Other female dogs would need to be tested accordingly, as well as other animals that would live in the household, which would require the interested party to provide appropriate training and an adjustment period. Ideally, children, if present, should already be somewhat older and more stable. A house with a garden would be ideal, but not a requirement. Of course, she enjoys every cuddle and also obeys quiet times, except for minor weaknesses. She can be left alone, is an enthusiastic passenger and learns toilet training quickly. A dog dream... we and the previous owners would be very happy if Sumsi finally has her own family again... Who wants to be challenged daily by our agile Sumsi, the others can be boring... The descriptions are impressions and recordings of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. Each animal can develop differently in its new home.

About Sumsi

What life with Sumsi looks like

Sumsi is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sumsi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sumsi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sumsi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sumsi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sumsi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sumsi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sumsi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
