Adopt Sunshine

Podenco · Female

For about 1 1/2 years, the 4-year-old Podenco female dog "Sunshine" (from Romania) has been in foster care in Wiesbaden. Previously, she lived with another owner in Germany for about three years until that person was hospitalized in an emergency and could no longer take care of Sunshine. Since Sunshine is very spirited and active, and her current foster home is no longer the youngest, we are looking for Sunshine a new permanent home with active people. The beautiful Sunshine is a very energetic and playful female dog. She loves to cuddle with her stuffed animal, is very affectionate, sociable, and warmly greets everyone who has ever petted her. Sunshine learns very quickly and always wants to do the right thing. She loves being active; rain doesn’t bother her on walks, and she’s always enthusiastic about joint outings. Her foster home often has to fetch the balls she throws, but at least Sunshine shows exactly where the ball landed. Sunshine can already stay alone for longer periods. Car rides go smoothly as well. She responds to basic commands like "sit," "down," her name, "come," and whistles. Additionally, the little Podenca is house-trained. However, walking without a leash is out of the question, as she is very skittish. She really dislikes the vacuum cleaner, although significant progress has been made in training her. Garbage collection, a backfiring exhaust, fireworks, or thunder also scare her. Targeted training with her new people would help her with these fears. Sunshine is very focused on humans and loves them regardless of their size. Once she gets to know someone and likes them, and feels that she is liked, she will greet them very warmly the next time they meet. If you ask her "walk?" and she starts dancing, it means she must go. She dutifully announces people in the stairwell and enjoys playing with her stuffed animals. She sprints through the garden at high speed for 5 minutes and then sleeps for 4 hours afterward. On a leash, Sunshine is somewhat uncertain around unfamiliar dogs. But when they run together off-leash in the garden, they become the best buddies. After one and a half years, she has become good friends with a free-roaming cat. They lovingly greet each other with nose nudges. The outdoor cat girl warns her with a paw if she gets too rough. There are no known health issues with her, except for a docked tail (stumpy tail). For the spirited Sunshine, we are looking for active people who can either train with her in dog training classes to help manage her energy level, for example, through mental exercises and intelligence games, or simply spend a lot of time doing activities with her so she can burn off her energy—or ideally both. :-) Who will give the absolutely adorable Sunshine a cozy dog bed in a new and permanent happy home?

About Sunshine

What life with Sunshine looks like

Sunshine is a large adult podenco dog waiting at Aktion Tierisch Happy e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sunshine, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sunshine?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Aktion Tierisch Happy e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sunshine on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sunshine if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Aktion Tierisch Happy e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sunshine already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sunshine isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Aktion Tierisch Happy e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sunshine and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
