It’s the nature of the job – it’s what animals do to you. You must accept that you’re going to be made to look like a fool multiple times a day, several times an hour and a few times every minute for as long as this job has you within its grip. This thought occurs to me as I flap my arms like a fledgling crow, drawing my knees up one after the other and whooping. Why am I doing this? So that I might make Susie act sillily too, of course. Susie came into our care heavily pregnant, heavier than perhaps we thought, and this meant that silliness and frivolity were far from the forefront of her mind. She had a heavy burden to bear and substantial discomfort to withstand and so I waited, kicking my shoes together like an impatient schoolchild, awaiting the day where we could play. Soon after this she gave birth to ten pups – Ten! – and so she doted and gave and gave and gave unto them everything that she had. But I still saw that playful glimmer in her eye, it wasn’t lost, it was just hibernating. Now, the pups are birthed, grown and fledged. Susie’s time is, once more, her own and she is choosing to use it unwisely. So that is why you find me here, in a field, on a besodden autumn morning, hollering and flapping like a bawling banshee. But it’s worth it. For through my bizarre actions, Susie feels comfortable enough to act likewise, with impunity, free from the judgement of others. As I dance, she spins and races and scuttles and runs and bends and bows and bounces. A spiralling of sandy fur. As I smile, so does she. It’s brief, true, but that doesn’t lessen my delight in seeing it. Susie is a bit of an angel. Unfailingly innocent and guileless, it’s hard to speak too highly of her. She is worthy of any and all commendations that I might send her way. How she was as a mother is exactly how she is as a friend: gentle, patient, loving, devoted. Perhaps too devoted. She finds it difficult to be parted from you, becoming anxious when left alone. She is, in all ways, a tender soul. A scratch of her ear, a rub of her chin, a tickle between her eyebrows; a rustling around her neck, a long pet over her back, a scritching of her rump. She loves it all. Savouring it with a calm that befits her gentle character. As you walk with her, she moves smoothly, almost silently, as she follows at your heel, trotting back if she strays too far. Working with animals might often render you comical, unserious, a fool, working with Susie offsets this with a feeling of being completely adored. Susie loves easily. Very easily. About Susie

What life with Susie looks like

Susie is a medium-sized adult lurcher dog waiting at RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Susie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Susie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Susie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Susie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Susie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Susie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire early rather than rehoming privately; they know Susie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
