adoption requirements adoption process Adopt this animal now! adoption requirements adoption process Sykes has found a home! His story: Here comes the magical Sykes (about 3 months old, currently 20 cm short and proud at 4 kg). A little treasure with a big personality who is just enjoying life to the fullest in his foster home in Romania. Sykes is not only loving and friendly but also surprisingly confident for his delicate age. This is no coincidence, as he carries a Dachshund mix within him! He was abandoned and found by a neighbor – a fate he wants to quickly leave behind with his strong personality to start his own happy ending. As a Dachshund mix, Sykes brings the famous breed-specific traits: a big will in a small body! Dachshunds are known for their charm, intelligence, and lovable stubbornness – they know exactly what they want. This means Sykes is a "strong character" with moderate energy who will need consistent, but always loving guidance to fully develop his potential. The good news: He is open to everything! He gets along super well with other dogs, and cats are no problem for him either. Right now, Sykes is in the puppy stage, where he absorbs everything like a sponge. This is the best time for loving socialization, playful learning, and training house manners, as well as gradually building up alone time. But beware, at around six months, the Dachshund puberty begins! This phase often starts earlier in small breeds and can be particularly intense. Sykes will try to conquer the world on his own, forget commands, and possibly assert his stubbornness more. Smells will suddenly become more exciting than a callback, and the typical Dachshund hunting instinct (even in a mix) could awaken. During this time, it is crucial to remain calm, patient, and most importantly, super consistent. Don't worry, it's only a phase – but it requires humor and a long breath! Sykes is now looking for people who love his adventurous spirit and the Dachshund-like character. People who will teach him that his big personality fits best with clear rules and lots of affection. Sykes travels microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and flea-treated to his family, together with his EU home permit. Stand: 04.11. Thank you Andrea S.! You gave the little Sykes a fitting unique name and thus gave him an identity.

Stand: 04.11.2025

About Sykes

What life with Sykes looks like

Sykes is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sykes, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sykes?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sykes on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sykes if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sykes already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sykes isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sykes and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
