Name: Szilaj Age: approx. 2.5 years (estimated date of birth: 2022. 03. 05.) Intake date: February 29, 2024 Sex: male Vaccinations: yes Microchip: yes Neutered: not yet Szilaj arrived at the shelter at the end of February 2024, on leap day. It's a full-house shelter, and the dogs inside almost never find homes, even though we keep tirelessly posting about our wonderful dogs! But it seems that's no use... Szilaj isn't the kind of dog everyone falls head over heels for because of his striking looks. Most people see him and forget him, because for them only appearance counts. If a dog isn't purebred, or at least breed-type, he becomes invisible and worthless in their eyes. But in our opinion, mixed dogs like him are the kindest and (not to mention) the healthiest. And Szilaj has an AMAZING HEART. His relationship with other male dogs is mixed, but it's not hopeless. He adores people, though. He would be loyal to his owner if someone looked into his soul, saw his inner beauty, and adopted him. He would gladly go on nice, relaxed-paced walks. He would joyfully greet his owner when they come home from work. Instead, he just waits, peeking through the bars of his kennel again and again. Szilaj is now 2.5 years old (estimated date of birth: 2022. 03. 05.), a medium-sized, very street-type mixed-breed young male dog. He has his full vaccination series and a microchip, and we are treating him for heartworm, so only neutering remains before he can move into his new home right away. He just needs a chance at last!

Ő örömmel üdvözölné a gazdit, mikor az hazaérkezik a munkából. Ehelyett ő is csak vár. Egyre csak vár a kennel rácsain átkukucskálva. Szilaj most 2,5 éves múlt, (becs. szül. idő: 2022. 03. 05.

About Szilaj

What life with Szilaj looks like

Szilaj is a medium-sized adult dog waiting at Méda az Állatokért Kunhegyes in Hungary.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Szilaj, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Szilaj?: Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Méda az Állatokért Kunhegyes handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Szilaj on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Szilaj if I live in another country?: Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Méda az Állatokért Kunhegyes will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Szilaj already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?: Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Szilaj isn't the right fit?: Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Méda az Állatokért Kunhegyes early rather than rehoming privately; they know Szilaj and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?: TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
