Adopt Talos

Kangal · Male

Gender: male, neutered Status: to be placed Talos was abandoned in a forest. The completely distressed young male dog was severely underweight and wore a much too small muzzle that prevented him from eating or drinking and even from panting. His background could be traced. An advertisement was placed against his last known owner. Now, Talos has recovered with us and has already gained some weight. He was medically checked and is now ready to be found by people who take him seriously and can give him what he deserves. After his past odyssey, we are looking for a home for him with people who have experience in the husbandry of very large dogs, ideally with herding dog experience, and can offer him a house and property (fenced!) in a rural setting. Talos is an absolutely affectionate and spoiled dog with his trusted people, who needs a lot of closeness and handling. He is also friendly and approachable with most unfamiliar people, although this is not always the case – previous experiences may play a role. Talos is relatively well-adjusted to fellow animals in free run, so he could be a good fit for a larger, independent female dog or a compatible male dog if the chemistry is right. However, he reacts extremely aggressively to cats, so neither cats nor small animals can be in his new home. Talos knows the basic commands, travels well in the car, and can be left alone for a reasonable amount of time. His new people should be steady and physically capable of handling him, able to provide a calm and independent leadership, and willing to continue working with him. Currently, he still reacts strongly to many external stimuli, especially passersby, cyclists, or even cats/wildlife, etc. He needs to be taken out of responsibility immediately and appropriate behavior reinforced. He is willing to orient himself if he has the right person by his side. We hope very much that this treasure will soon find competent people who can accompany him through life. Gets along with other dogs.

About Talos

What life with Talos looks like

Talos is a small adult kangal dog waiting at Tierheim Neu-Amerika in Annaberg-Buchholz.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Talos, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Talos?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Neu-Amerika handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Talos on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Talos if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Neu-Amerika will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Talos already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Talos isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Neu-Amerika early rather than rehoming privately; they know Talos and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
