Tara

Mixed Breed · Female

Tara comes from the gardening area under the Furča district in Košice, where she lived in difficult conditions. Life was not kind to Tara – she lost part of her hind leg. We don't know how it happened, but one thing is certain: the wound was not treated or amputated by a veterinarian. Despite this, Tara is remarkably strong and resilient. With her disability, she has learned to function, and her missing leg does not hinder her movement in any way. Tara literally flies on three legs – she loves running, movement, speed and the joy of freedom. Fetching and active games are great pleasures for her. Tara is a spirited, intelligent dog, but she needs time and patience to get used to a new environment and people. She is cautious, sensitive and doesn't tolerate pressure – if she feels that someone is forcing her to do something, she will clearly show it. But when she begins to trust someone, she will show her softer side – she is friendly, affectionate and enjoys spending time with her person. However, the relationship with her must be based on respect, trust and clearly defined boundaries. Tara is trainable and has the potential to become a great companion, but she needs an experienced person who is not afraid of dogs, has patience and respects her individuality. She is suitable only for people who already have experience with more challenging or sensitive dogs. We do not recommend her for children, inexperienced owners or first-time dog owners. She gets along with other dogs and female dogs depending on her mood – sometimes she plays with them all day, sometimes she prefers to stay aside or simply ignores them. Therefore, compatibility depends on the specific situation and her current mood. Handling must be careful – Tara does not seek it and must be approached with respect. However, if she feels trust and stability, it is possible to work with her and slowly move forward. She behaves politely during the day and has good hygiene habits. She can find her place if she has peace, safety and her space. Tara is looking for a loving, experienced and patient home – ideally with a person who has time to devote to her, work with her and give her a chance to show how exceptional a dog she is.

SK·Show original

So svojím hendikepom sa naučila fungovať a dnes jej chýbajúca labka v pohybe nijak nebráni. No keď niekomu začne dôverovať, ukáže svoju milšiu stránku – je priateľská, mojkavá a rada trávi čas so svojím človekom. Vie si nájsť svoje miesto, pokiaľ má pokoj, bezpečie a svoj priestor.

About Tara

What life with Tara looks like

Tara is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ÚVP Košice in Slovakia.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇸🇰Adopting from Slovakia

Slovak rescue groups coordinate cross-border transport with European partners. Animals are chipped and vaccinated; sterilization is often included for adults and arranged post-adoption for puppies/kittens.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ÚVP Košice handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ÚVP Košice will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ÚVP Košice early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (SK). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
