Two small dogs huddled together in their flimsy kennels opposite each other. The water had frozen in the kettle that served as a cup and there was no food. We had survived in primitive conditions before, but something was different this time. Those familiar people hadn't been seen for a while. Hunger was already gnawing at my belly. The chain around my neck made sure I couldn't leave to look for food and shelter elsewhere. Fortunately, help came in time and kind people came to take us away. Our owners had passed away and that would have been our fate too if the neighbors hadn't intervened. I had lived my entire short life on a chain and don't know much about the world being much larger than the two-meter area I could reach when the chain tightened around my neck. The shelter thinks that the male dog with me is my puppy, and fortunately, he has already been adopted into his own home. Although I am shy by nature, I still crave human attention, which I have been deprived of for so many years. I have never shown any kind of aggression.

Olimme joutuneet ennenkin selviytymään alkeellisissa oloissa, mutta nyt jokin oli toisin. Niitä tuttuja ihmisiä ei ollut näkynyt vähään aikaan. Nälkäkin alkoi jo kurnia vatsanpohjassa. Ketju kaulani ympärillä piti huolen, etten voinut lähteä etsimään ruokaa ja suojaa mistään muualta. Onneksi apu kuitenkin tuli ajoissa ja kiltit ihmiset tulivat hakemaan meidät pois. Omistajamme olivat menehtyneet ja se olisi ollut meidänkin kohtalomme elleivät naapurit olisi puuttuneet asiaan. Olen elänyt koko lyhyen elämäni ketjussa enkä tiedä juurikaan, että maailma on paljon suurempi kuin se parin metrin päähän ulottuva alue, johon pystyin kurkottamaan ketjun kiristäessä kaulaani. Tarhalta arvellaan, että kanssani ollut uros on pentuni, ja onnekseni jo adoptoitu omaan kotiinsa. Vaikka olen luonteeltani hieman ujo, janoan silti ihmisen huomiota, jota vaille olen jäänyt niin monet vuodet. En ole missään vaiheessa osoittanut minkäänlaista aggressiivisuutta.
