Tekla

Female · Adult · 6 years

Before Tekla ended up at the shelter, she led a rather independent street life in the northern part of Poznań, full of adventures that weren't always pleasant. This beautiful female dog hadn't yet learned in her previous life that humans can be safe companions for dogs; it took a long and consistent effort from her caregivers for her to trust that people wouldn't harm her. Currently, she's becoming more and more open to new people and is gradually opening up with each outing from her shelter enclosure. She’s learned to walk beautifully on a leash and derives great joy from walks. Tekla now enjoys the company of people she already trusts. She has an incredible appetite and eagerly cooperates during training sessions. She loves running—this is not only her way of releasing energy but also the only form of play she knows. She’s happy to beg for and steal treats. She doesn’t panic when she sees street traffic, but she’s much calmer in quiet areas where there aren’t too many people or unexpected situations. Occasionally, she still gets startled by sudden appearances, such as a cyclist or scooter rider, so it would be best for her to live in a peaceful location away from the city center. Tekla needs time to build trust with a new person. She values her personal space, so she’ll need someone who can read her body language and won’t force physical contact. However, once she does trust someone, she’s very eager to interact and will often initiate contact herself. The sudden appearance of a strange dog strongly excites her, so we’re looking for a home where Tekla would be the only dog. Tekla is still learning how to get into a car, but she’s becoming increasingly comfortable indoors and can now calmly occupy herself in enclosed spaces. For Tekla, we’re looking for a home that: – is patient, respects her personal space, and understands canine communication; – is located in a quiet area, away from the city center; – has no small children or other dogs.

Zanim Tekla trafiła do schroniska, wiodła dość niezależne, pełne niekoniecznie miłych przygód uliczne życie w północnej części Poznania. Dla Tekli szukamy domu: – cierpliwego, szanującego przestrzeń i rozumiejącego komunikację psa; – w spokojnej okolicy, poza centrum miasta; – bez małych dzieci i innych psów.

About Tekla

What life with Tekla looks like

Tekla is a large adult dog waiting at Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu in Poznan.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tekla, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tekla?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tekla on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tekla if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tekla already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tekla isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tekla and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
