Tequilo

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 12 years

Tequilo is 12 years old and is probably one of the most challenging cases we’re currently caring for. He had to be given up because he displays aggressive behavior toward other people, posing a serious threat to those around him. We don’t want to downplay or minimize this: Tequilo attacks people, which is why he’s not the right cat for an average household. What’s particularly striking is that he behaved completely differently toward his former owner. There, he was affectionate, readily allowed himself to be touched and cared for without any problems. To find the cause of his behavior, he underwent a comprehensive veterinary examination—but unfortunately, no cause could be identified. Even here at our facility, we’ve so far been unable to pinpoint any medical or obvious trigger that would explain his aggression. At present, Tequilo lives alone in one of our cat rooms, as he doesn’t want to have any contact with other cats either. Unfortunately, his daily routine is rather monotonous, since only a few carefully selected individuals are allowed to enter his room and care for him. Nevertheless, there are small signs of progress. Tequilo has now developed trust toward one particular caregiver. For a treat, he’ll briefly allow his head to be touched and accepts her presence. That may sound like little, but for Tequilo, it’s a huge step—and it shows that there is definitely potential, provided you’re willing to give him plenty of time, patience, and space. Therefore, we’re not looking for someone who simply wants a cuddly companion. We’re looking for someone who’s ready to take on a real challenge. His future home should be quiet and secluded—ideally located far away from close neighborhoods or frequent social interactions, so we can rule out the possibility of Tequilo encountering strangers uncontrolled. Children must absolutely not live in the household. We’re seeking exclusively very experienced cat owners who can assess feline behavior, respect boundaries, and have no expectations whatsoever regarding closeness or affection. Anyone who takes Tequilo in shouldn’t do so just to get a lap cat—but rather to give a special animal a chance at a dignified life outside of a cat room. Perhaps somewhere out there, there’s exactly that one person. Someone who isn’t searching for perfection, but is willing to take responsibility, bring patience, and simply accept Tequilo just as he is. Just write to us. As soon as we receive your message, we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Please understand that we can’t always respond immediately. Please allow us one to two days to get back to you.

About Tequilo

What life with Tequilo looks like

Tequilo is a large senior mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. in Germany.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tequilo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tequilo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tequilo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tequilo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tequilo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tequilo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tequilo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
