Terra

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

A wonderful red-and-white grandma is waiting in Malaga for the redeeming news that she does not have to spend the autumn of her life in an animal shelter, but can instead be spoiled in a real home by a loving family. Almost three years ago, our friends from APA La Sonrisa took the lively Podenco Terra into their care. Terra had lived for many years in another kennel, but no one could be enchanted by the absolutely lovable and easygoing female dog. The staff at La Sonrisa were convinced that someone would quickly fall in love with the pretty bat-eared dog - but now we are in 2022 and Terra is still waiting. Meanwhile, the always cheerful and very playful girl is over 10 years old (as of March 2022) and still hopes to become visible for a special person and someone's best friend. Terra is a true joker and lives in our partner's facility with a family atmosphere. An animal rescuer lives on the premises of the shelter and long-term guests like Terra are also allowed to stay in the house. At least cold winter nights are no longer such a big problem, but during the day all the dogs are in the yard - and senior dogs just want some peace and quiet sometimes to relax in the sun, and ideally, a loving hand would be there for some individual cuddles. For such things, there is naturally not enough time in the fast-paced shelter life. We would like Terra to still get to experience everything, from cozy TV evenings on the soft and warm couch to exciting walks to explore and conquer the world. Terra is positive for leishmaniasis and was treated a few months ago due to a relapse. She is currently very stable, being treated with Allopurinol. If you are interested in our funny grandma, but unsure because of her illness, please contact us. We will gladly explain in detail what it means to live with a LM dog and how you can help Terra. Leishmaniasis is an incurable disease, but in recent years good treatment options have become available, and Terras age and her unbroken joy of life are the best proof that a Mediterranean disease should not stand in the way of a well-considered adoption. Terra is a sunshine - we would be extremely happy if she could illuminate the life of a very special person.

About Terra

What life with Terra looks like

Terra is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Terra, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Terra?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Terra on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Terra if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Terra already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Terra isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Terra and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
