Tessa

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 13 years

The 13.5-year-old female dog came to the animal shelter on April 18, 2026, as she was overwhelmed with the new-born and the changed family situation. Tessa originally came from Hungary as a puppy and lived for many years on a farm in the north with her owner. There, she grew up with sheep, cows, and horses, and loved being outdoors and observing her surroundings attentively. For about three years, she also knew life in a small apartment. Before the move last year, she regularly commuted between the North Sea and her current home—she masters car rides without any problems. With her people, Tessa is cuddly and clingy and only reluctantly stays alone in the apartment. She knows basic commands, walks well on a leash, and neither reacts to joggers, cars, nor other dogs when out. Additionally, she is quite clever and can open doors. Tessa knows living with an 11-year-old child and a cat. However, she chases unfamiliar cats when outside. She has had limited contact with other dogs. In dealing with puppy and kitten children, she showed herself to be caring and affectionate. Her fur has been shorn once a year. At the animal shelter, after a short adjustment period, Tessa shows herself to be a very loving, calm senior. She enjoys having her ears scratched, likes to go for short walks, and is happy when she is allowed to lie in the run and relax. For the lovable senior dog, we are looking for a final retirement spot with an ideally ground-level access to the outdoors. A quiet home with little commotion would be ideal. Children should already be a bit older. This is a young, adolescent dog.

About Tessa

What life with Tessa looks like

Tessa is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Heilbronn in Heilbronn.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tessa, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tessa?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Heilbronn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tessa on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tessa if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Heilbronn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tessa already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tessa isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Heilbronn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tessa and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
