Thorin

Border Collie · Male · Young · 3 years

Personality & BehaviorThorin came to the shelter in May 2025 when his owner sadly could no longer afford to care for him. It was not an easy decision, but it meant Thorin had the chance to find a home that could truly meet his needs. He is a young, energetic dog with the mindset of a working breed, similar to Border Collies, even though he is a mixed breed. Thorin is intelligent, active, and enjoys being around people. He is very social and likes interaction, but he also has a strong personality. At the shelter, Thorin shares his space with Laura, which shows he can live with other dogs. However, he can be a bit territorial and protective around food, something that will need understanding and continued guidance in a home environment. With structure and the right leadership, dogs like Thorin can thrive and become incredibly loyal companions.Thorin was once given a chance through an adoption trial. Unfortunately, after several home checks, we discovered that he was often being left alone on the property with no one around. Because Thorin needs engagement, attention, and a real connection with his people, we made the decision to bring him back to the shelter so we could find a home that truly suits him. Adoption RequirementsHome type : Thorin would do best in a home where he won’t be left alone for long periods, in a secure space where he can exercise both mentally and physically.Experience level : An active home that understands energetic, working-type dogs. A family or individual who can spend time with him and include him in daily life. Someone willing to continue training and provide clear structure.Other pets/kids : He could potentially live with another balanced dog, as he already shares a box, but introductions and management around food will be important. About Thorin

What life with Thorin looks like

Thorin is a large young adult border collie dog waiting at Tiny Shelter Portugal in Albufeira.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting Thorin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Thorin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tiny Shelter Portugal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Thorin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Thorin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tiny Shelter Portugal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Thorin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Thorin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tiny Shelter Portugal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Thorin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
