Arko

Rottweiler · Male · Adult · 8 years

Arco is a basically friendly dog, though he can sometimes be a bit skeptical of strangers at first. Arco loves being outdoors, so he should be placed in a new home with a house and property where he can certainly keep a good watch. However, family integration is important for him, meaning no purely outdoor living. He gets along well with female dogs, often being a bit forward with the girls. Male dogs, on the other hand, are not his preference. The sturdy male dog has his own mind and needs to learn to develop trust in certain situations. Therefore, a muzzle is recommended when visiting the vet, for example. Arco is, however, easy to read and will make himself known if he feels uncomfortable in a situation. Overall, he is an open male dog in the best age range and is urgently in search of a wonderful new home where he can be meaningfully engaged with and supported and challenged. Arco has beginning hip dysplasia, which means he should be rehomed on the ground floor. Additionally, he requires daily thyroid medication because he has a thyroid underfunction. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please contact us preferably by email. Describe in the email how the dog will live with you and send us a phone number. Then a staff member will contact you. Dog descriptions are based on observations at the animal shelter or information from third parties and do not represent guaranteed characteristics.

About Arko

What life with Arko looks like

Arko is a large adult rottweiler dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Hip dysplasia (both sides), requires daily thyroid medication for hypothyroidism, needs muzzle at vet visits

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Arko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Arko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Arko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Arko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Arko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Arko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Arko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
