Adopt Sharek

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 8 years

Sharek is a serious and introspective dog. After a brief stay at an animal shelter, he was quickly rehomed into a herding dog experienced household with ideal conditions. Unfortunately, a serious bite incident occurred after a relatively short time, the trigger of which is unclear to us. It is likely that a painful prostate condition, which was surgically treated, contributed to the incident, resulting in Sharek also being neutered. Given that Sharek already had a very good, experienced home and that this did not work out, we are somewhat at a loss. It is important that there are no children in the household. The bite incident occurred during bedtime in a sleeping position and was directed at the primary caregiver. Therefore, Sharek should ideally sleep in a separate room or be secured with a muzzle at night. An apartment living situation is not the best option for Sharek; he should have space and room, so that a husbandry as a farm dog with family connections is also conceivable. His new primary caregiver should have experience in the husbandry of behaviorally challenged herding dogs. An initial contact with an aggression-specialized dog trainer could also be beneficial. At the animal shelter, Sharek shows relatively unobtrusive behavior and can be combed. With treats, he is well motivated and shows himself to be leash-friendly once he has released his first energy. He has now established a regular gassierer, with whom he undertakes long excursions in the surroundings. Sharek goes very willingly into the water and loves to travel by car. We are clearly looking for the needle in the haystack, but want to offer Sharek a rehoming perspective. Where are the Shepherd dog friends who can give this picture-perfect German Shepherd a home? If you can realistically envision the training project "Sharek," please contact the animal shelter by email for further discussion regarding living conditions. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please contact us preferably by email. Describe to us how the dog will live with you and send us a phone number. Then a staff member will contact you. Animal descriptions are based on observations at the animal shelter or information from third parties and do not represent guaranteed characteristics. Walks well on a leash.

About Sharek

What life with Sharek looks like

Sharek is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: History of serious biting incident, requires sleeping arrangements with muzzle or separate room, needs specialized training for aggression issues

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sharek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sharek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sharek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sharek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sharek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sharek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sharek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
